Control from Kaitlyn Gilham on Vimeo.
Our piece is symbolic of having control of the forces that are put upon you, such as stress. By remaining in control of any negative force in your life it is much easer to release yourself from it. The girl being wrapped in the register tape is symbolic of a situation that will surround her, but her control over the situation allows her to be able to escape it.
To me this piece represents struggles that some people have to deal with. Unlike other struggles where a person does what they can to get out of a bind i feel like this is a struggle where a certain person has no choice but to just sit back and take it until its over. I feel that the paper is a great way to show mental struggle in everyday life rather than a physical one in which happens less often. To me this piece was a good rendition of a struggle and was well thought and acted out.
ReplyDeleteThere was a lot of tension created during this piece by the silence of both Alina and Kaitlyn, as well as the concentration of both during the performance. The white paper was held by Kaitlyn making the viewer think that the binding was voluntary. The piece ends with Alina walking to the other side of the room and ripping off the end of the paper, Kaitlyn voluntarily unwinds herself. She is in complete control, able to unwind herself or tear the paper from her body anytime she wishes. There is a certain amount of trust in Kaitlyn allowing Alina to bind her. In the end I feel like the piece gave off more of a feeling of the chances we take and the situations we place ourselves in in order to liberate ourselves.
