  1. this piece was comprised of two girls on the floor weaving a pattern together out of red and white yarn while a third girl, seated on a stool above the other two held the work at one end. it had an undertone of some triptych, primordial female goddesses weaving the world into existence, or a metaphor for existence as it was and is continuing to be. the piece ended when the audience felt it was time for it to end, at which time the members clapped and the girls left the scene and took the braided pattern with them. the two girls doing the weaving seemed to be doing the center one a favor by the work. their efforts seemed expected by the third girl, and she did not look at the pattern while it was being made. this dissimilation with the action set a feeling of removal from the audience. it was as though she was not a part of what the audience was seeing. she was distant for some reason, and played a very small role in the work that was being done. it called to mind the idea of denial or rejection. somehow she was not as much of a part of the work, but at the same time, she was almost the key to the performance. the feeling of continuum was well conveyed and left plenty of room in its ambiguity for the audience's imagination to make their own stories. the conditions of the piece were directed toward the audience, not including them in the piece, so the action had a well-placed tension on the audience in the idea of performing an unconventional action while on display indefinitely.

  2. This performance really stuck out to me in it's own unique way. It featured Olivia, Elizabeth and Kelsey creating a "friendship bracelet" with red and white yarn. Elizabeth sat holding the base of the yarn turned facing away from the audience, on a stool elevated from Olivia and Kelsey who sat on the ground and braided the bracelet. There was something about the overall process of doing the same movements over and over again that seemed so relaxing. It really drew my observation in to see how much the bracelet was changing through the time they had. I was interested in seeing more, perhaps to see it even finish. There was something about the way Elizabeth was sitting facing away from Olivia and Kelsey that made the piece amusing. At one point I couldn't see the already made bracelet and it looked as if they were using the red and white yarn, which reminded me of first aid bandages, to heal Elizabeth in some way. The whole performance seemed very intimate and although they could have made it more active in some way I think it was enough to convey the emotion and message they were trying to illustrate.

  3. This performance piece was very interesting and evoked a great deal of thought and wonder. It involved two girls knotting an oversized chevron pattern, while a third girl held it in place. The performance duration was determined only by the audience. While the two braiding girls frantically tied knots using the red and white yarn and forming the pattern, the third girl who was holding the large bracelet sat on a stool, looking away, acting aloof. The frantic action of the two girls hurriedly braiding gave the impression that they had a mission to complete this piece by a specific deadline, which was ironic, since the duration of the piece was very undefined. There may also have been various reasons as to why the third girl was so aloof. It may have been that she was unbothered by the progress and was used merely as a prop in the performance. It may also have symbolized that this woven pattern was being made for her, without her concern or intervention other than by grounding the situation, symbolizing a somewhat distant source of power. Finally, the colors chosen seemed to have symbolism, although it wasn't quite clear as to how the two colors' symbolic associations played into the performance overall. Red may symbolize passion or anger, whereas white may represent purity or innocence. These colors' meanings at least were in contrast to one another. Overall, this piece was intriguing and well-executed.
