Solitary

I sat in a box for 3 hours on April 23rd. I wanted to literally be the art piece in this performance. In order to do this I made a clear box like the boxes used to cover delicate sculptures in galleries. I moved really slowly to keep people interested in the piece, and it created an entire new world for me in the box. That led to the name of the piece: solitary. I was in my own world and moving around in that world.

Analysis

The viewer enters Miller looking down the stairs to see Alex Kozachek sitting in the corner with his back against the audience. The viewer then moves down the stairs to be on the same level as Alex. He ignored the audience and continues to stare at the corner.

When looking from the top of the stairs Alex was fighting with my attention with the window. This was not a problem for me because I enjoyed the struggle between this tiny person and the massive beautiful scenery outside the window. The window in a way was like the authority figure that put Alex in the punishment. The struggle was the reason he was sent to the corner. When I walked down the stairs that struggle with my attention died and I focused more on Alex. That was sort of like I was understanding his side of the argument and the punishment because more harsh.

The way he was being punished did not seem that harsh. The amount of time he was sitting there seemed a bit scary, but since the piece over exaggerated the punishment I thought about the punishment not being that harsh. Since I viewed the piece as more of a story I felt sorry for Alex but not all the kids who have been through that punishment.

3 hour endurance piece

I, Ashley Goodwyn will be at Cohen sitting in a clear box on top of a table for 3 hours. on Friday, April 23rd 2010. I will be in all white. I will only move a little and when I do move it must be very slow. I will not be allowed to make any noises. There will be a label near my piece that has the title of the piece and the table that I will be on will be covered in a white material.

We were trying to convey a day in the life of a student. It starts out with the idea of a dream; then going to a morning with the character waking up from the dream.

Attempted Simulation

We wanted to create a machine that needed the assistance of a human to operate. We played around with controlled artificial intelligence, and designed it so that you have to continue pressing the button while the apparatus moves from side to side. This creates difficulty in keeping the button held down fluidly and creates the illusion that the arm has it's own personality, when really, you are the one giving it its source. We added a smug face (well done by our model Colby Charpentier) that has a slight condescending and mocking expression to add to the experience of human interaction with a machine.

Catch the Butterfly

I decided to explore the possibility of two things moving at one time while only turning one handle. Thinking about how I would accomplish this I decided to make a butterfly flying away from the net. The net for the most part misses the butterfly but if the wings and the net are at the exact right position it will catch the butterfly. This explores the idea of people trying really hard to get what they want, but they wont get that unless they work hard.

Progression of Consumption

I chose to document time by recording the food I ate during the day. I found that lunch was the largest meal that I ate or at least it has the largest variety of food. By placing the food in progression with time it also showed a progression of size.
