Share A Smile: Documentation

On Sunday, February 8, 2010, I, Kaitlyn Gilham, shared smiles with 26 strangers in various public areas in Buffalo, New York.

Sharing smiles with strangers is harder than you'd think it would be. Just smiling at people doesn't insure that they will smile back, especially in public areas. To get people to share a smile with me I mostly found myself trying to have conversations with them, or display some act of kindness towards them.

Just smiling at people made them actually lose eye contact with me more rapidly, and seemed to make people more uncomfortable. When allowing myself to be comfortable around others it became much easer for them to be comfortable around me, which made smile sharing happen more often.

Special thanks to Alyssa Serba for helping document my day.

Share A Smile

"Today, give a stranger one of your smiles. It might be the only sunshine he sees all day. " ~Quoted in P.S. I Love You, compiled by H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

They say that a simple passing of a smile can brighten any ones day.On Sunday, February 7, 2010 from 9 am- 3pm, I, Kaitlyn Gilham, will attempt to share as many smiles as possible with strangers in various public places in Buffalo New York.

Performance: Control

Control from Kaitlyn Gilham on Vimeo.

Our piece is symbolic of having control of the forces that are put upon you, such as stress. By remaining in control of any negative force in your life it is much easer to release yourself from it. The girl being wrapped in the register tape is symbolic of a situation that will surround her, but her control over the situation allows her to be able to escape it.

Personal Record of Time: People Map

Everyday as I walk around campus I see certain people at different times of the day. I then realized that I could tell what time of the day it was by who i saw walking by. During my 21 hour experiment I wrote down where I saw certain people during the day and then I would wright down my estimate of the time I saw them. I later created this map to better document my experiment of time. Each person has their own color and some were seen more that once throughout the day.
