Automata

I like to call this project the "probability machine", because of the rare sound that it produces. I wanted the sound of two ringing spoons and I didn't want to settle and create a different sound, what i found to be most interesting part of my piece is that it built up suspense and rare nature of the action made people more excited when the spoons finally produce the sound.

Personal Record of time

For my personal record of time i recored who i had spent time with, and what i had done with those people.

Quick reminder!

Thursday and Friday will be our final crits for Time. Please install you works the night before so we are ready to begin at 9 am. If you have 'special needs' please contact Alicia or Michelle before Wednesday. Looking forward to see your projects!

Record of Time

For my record of time, I listened to an album of music on my ipod for every "hour". Each album that I chose had a duration of about an hour. So, each album provided a rough estimation of how much time had passed. Each track was a subdivision of the album, or the normal time equivalent of a minute. So this is a new way of telling time without using a clock. Here is my "music clock" of the 12 hours that I did this assignment:

1st album- Midnight Marauders by A Tribe Called Quest
2nd abum- Labor Days by Aesop Rock
3rd album- Hello Nasty by The Beastie Boys
4th album- Mind Fusion vol. 3 by Madlib
5th album- Do You Want More!?!!!??! by The Roots
6th album- A Retrospective by KRS One
7th album- La La Means I Love You by The Delfonics
8th album- Stakes is High by De La Soul
9th album- Tales of Forgotten Melodies by Wax Tailor
10th album- Music by Cavelight by Blockhead
11th album- Enter the 36 Chambers by Wu-Tang Clan
12th album- Liquid Courage by Wax and EOM

Sound Postcard Andrew Ross

For my sound postcard I recorded the sound of a fan and then, using digital software, I slowed down the pitch gradually until it was - 100% (which means that the sound is at a "zero point" where it is not playing or making noise anymore).
I chose this sound because I usually use a fan in my room everyday. While sitting in my dorm, the hum of the fan is a constant sound. I wanted to experiment with altering that consistent buzz. The most interesting way to do so I found was to change the pitch of the sound (slowing down or speeding up the sound). First I tried with my turntables, but the range of pitch change was only + or - 10%. So instead I used a music mixing software on my computer which had a pitch changing range + or - 100%. I played the recorded sound in the program and recorded myself slowing it down gradually to - 100% or the point at which the sound stops completely.

Cardboard Automata

For my cardboard automata, I attached 3 pennies to the top so that when the crank was turned, the dowel rod would spin and go up and down causing the pennies to hit against each other making a sort of clinging noise. The objects I used were a dowel rod, pennies, post it note, a straw and cardboard.

Time Automata

My time automata had two sources of sound: a scraping stick on a large screw and a bell. To create sound you had to turn the handle counter clockwise. Elements I used were cardboard, a screw, a bell, popsicle sticks, and a dowel.

Time Atomata

For my Time Atomata I had two sources of sound. One came from the two circles. Attached to the horizontal circle were four wooden sticks. To create sound you needed to hold on to each end of the rod and turn it back and forth (Not a complete turn!!) causing it to hit the chimes in the back created from nails, sticks, and round metal pieces.
The other source of sound came from the film canister. Inside were a variety of small items and to create noise you had to pull the rod up and down in order for the objects inside to create sound.

Time

Today I will not be able to look at a clock in order to keep track of time, therefore I must rely on other forms of time telling. What makes the most sense for my situation is to base it off of everyday activities that correspond with what is going on throughout my day.
I got out of foundations which I know ends at 11:00, went to my room to drop off my things and headed straight to Ade for lunch. My roommate and I headed back to the room until we both had to leave for art history. I have english directly after art history so I made my way there. After class is when I had more trouble. Luckily I didn't have any set appointments to attend so I stayed in my room working on various things and occasionally writing down times that I thought it was to eventually see if i was right. At one point I thought that it was close to 6:00 pm, but I found our later that it was only 5:00. About an hour later the Alfred siren went off and I finally knew what time it was. I went to dinner around this time and then finally began to use my clock again. When we were given this assignment I never really realized how dependent I was on my phone to constantly look at the time and pace myself throughout the day. It gave me a lot of insight and caused me to be very paranoid... so I most likely will never do this again!

Cardboard Automata

Here is the cardboard automata I constructed. It's mostly functional, except the occasional moment when a paper clip catches a sheet of paper.

Important Reminder!

At this time you should have posted 7 assignments and added one comment to another person's work. We will accept late posts until February 26, Friday at 10 pm. After that date, only the final project will be reviewed and graded. As we have discussed, we are grading the work via the blog. Any work that is not there, will receive a failing grade.

Manifesto

I, Jake Sartorius Bernson, and my partner, Andrew Ross, will be working together for this assignment. One of us will be blind and the other deaf. To determine which of us will be blind and which will be deaf, we will flip a coin. Andrew will be deaf and I will be blind. Our hands will then be duck taped together; his right hand to my left. We will be like this for 6 hours.

Personal Record Of Time

My Personal record of time was drawn on my arm over the span of the whole day. I would every hour guess what time it was, and if i got it right i would mark a green slash on my arm, and if i got it wrong i would mark a red slash. After the whole day i got about 4 right and 12 wrong. This showed me how far off my internal clock was off every hour. During the project I was extremely aware of the measurement of time.

A Personal Record of Time

A Personal Record of Time

I sat in my room and watched and listened to my room mate for periods throughout the day.

11:03 am - Li is asleep.
11:47 am - Li begins to stir and awake from her deep sleep. She gets out of bed and leaves the room.
11:54 am - Li returns to the room, and sits at her desk, turning on her Macbook.
12:30 pm - As I listen to Li, I hear a lot of paper rustling around on her desk. She has started to make her paper sculptures.
1:46 pm - Li grabs her hat, puts on her coat and leaves the room to go to Terra Cotta.
3:55 pm - Li returns to the room again, and sits in her bed, watching tv shows on her computer.
5:14 pm - Li walks over to the refrigerator, and grabs her macaroni salad.
5:29 pm - Li is finished eating her macaroni salad.

6 Hour Performance : Strip

For this project, I decided to focus on the subject of being stripped of ones possessions while documenting my thoughts and experiences throughout the process by writing in a sketchbook. My original plan was the same, but experiencing it outside. I thought that since the project dealt with endurance it would have a stronger effect if it took place outside enduring both the cold and judgement due to lack of clothing. Unfortunately however, I was involved in a car accident and got a concussion which prevented me from continuing on with my initial performance idea on the day it was planned. Also, due to the drastic weather change I altered the location.

I still wanted to focus on the idea or being stripped of my possessions so I continued with my idea inside. I sat in the Reimer game room, not talking to anyone just sitting, writing ideas and thoughts while removing a layer of clothing every hour. Each layer of clothes represented a different moment in my life. The first layer was all of my winter gear representing present time. The next layer depicted my everyday life, studio clothes. Next was a dress that represented all of the special occasions or days I felt like dressing up. The next layer was my favorite. I had on leggings and a Michigan shirt. I am from Michigan so when the hour reached it's end the stripping of this shirt represented the stripping of my home, and comfort zone. Lastly I was sitting in a bra. This was the outfit I was least comfortable in and unfortunately had the largest audience for.

As each hour passed the pile of clothes grew and I became less clothed. It was a bit uncomfortable toward the end as a mob of people walked by staring at me, but other then that I thought that it was a really interesting experience. Looking back at the sketchbook of thoughts and ideas it was interesting just to see how my mind works and what I think about it in different situations. The less comfortable I got the less I wrote showing me that I really pay attention to the things going on around me and I care about what other people think of me and how they view me. My entries started talking about the present and what I was doing at that moment but my mind drifted into talking about different events that had happened and I began connecting them to different events in the past and some how reconnected it back to the present. It was strange how subconsciously I wrote for six hours about a million different topics but managed to create a cycle I guess... a cycle of thoughts that are all interconnected. I just thought that that aspect was really interesting. One day I would like to alter this project a bit but try it outside so that way I can get more of a reaction and a different outlook on the experience!

For my endurance piece, I was silent for six hours. Since this was for my class I had to document this experience somehow. I wasn't really sure how to document this art piece: since I wasn't speaking recording sound wasn't possible, I'm not very good with video, and pictures wouldn't capture what was going on in my head. So I came up with the idea to document my performance by writing down my thoughts every hour or so. This I believed would allow people to better see into my head and to see what was going on. While I was silent I noticed that it became harder and harder depending on the situations I was placed in. Class wasn't hard, unless I didn't understand something. Lunch was the hardest because I sat with all of my friends and a few of them were purposefully saying mean things to try and get me to talk. I stayed there as long as I could take and finally I had to get up and leave before I started shouting. This helped me to realize my lack of patience and how it was better to walk away from a bad situation. I feel that I've grown from this silence in a way. I've included an excerpt of two of the hours:

10:50 am

Foundations class is almost over for the day. I noticed that at times it was hard to be silent, especially when I didn't understand something or when my professor wanted to talk about my artwork. When I was busy, time seemed to fly by and no one bothered me. English class is next at 11:20.

1:20 pm

Art History is going to start. I'm going to write this down before the lights are turned out.
Through my experience I noticed that my boyfriend, Shane, was trying to be supportive in his own way. I noticed that while I wasn't able to talk, he would forget that he could talk and so he would also resort to miming. It was rather amusing to see that my speech has such an effect on him. After allowing him to try and convey a message to me, I mimed that he was allowed to speak. We both had a good chuckle at that.
After dealing with my friends at lunch, and calming down, I realized that Shane was trying to challenge me. My day way somewhat uneventful and I didn't have much time to interact with people because I was in class all day. So when it was time for lunch, Shane wanted to "help me" with my art project.
This is my last hour of silence.

HACK FOR LIFE: On tuesday febuary 9th from 1230 to 630 i played hacky sack in cohen. my friends Evan Coronis and Garrett Borden joined me for 4 hours of this time in total. in the beginning i started out by myself attempting to hack. Hacking all alone is not only very difficult but tiring as well. i started out slow by practicing moves that i am currently rusty at and need to improve on. i have never hacked with my left foot alot before so i got the idea to practice on that aspect. i saw a improvement in a very short time surpisingly. after about 2 hours or a little less my friends came down with there video camera so that i could document this project. we started out with all 3 of us and then my friends rotated breaks. The footage that we recorded is some really prime hack. there were alot of difficult moves thrown as we continued to play. After watching the footage again i was very pleased with the day even though during i didnt feel like it was that great. the over all experience was exausting to be completely honest. The footage i took was so long that it would not upload properly so i chose to put what i thought was the best hack of the videos together for your viewing pleasure. i was unable to take pictures because they are to blurry with all of the movement. i hope you enjoy the movie. take it easy-kevin dunn

6 Hours Performance : Dots

For my performance, I decided to make dots with my pens and markers in Moka Joka. Tuesday, February 9th 2010. After having a dinner with my friends, I went harder hall with my bristol pad. I started to make dots from 7:11pm to 1:11am. I was so worried if I could stand for 6 hours making dots since 6 hours is not short time to do something. Before I start my 6 hours performance, I kept thinking how I usually spend 6 hours in my normal day. But I wasn't really sure because time goes fast when I hang out with my friends or do my homework .However, I really enjoyed this performance because I found out lots of interesting things. When I start the perfomance, I thought the last 2 hours of performance would be worst because It is pain to wait another 2 hours until get done. For me, It was very hard to make dots in the beginning of 2 hours.I switched the color every hour and I used 2 colors for each paper. So basically I had 3 papers during 6 hours. First paper, I feel like I payed attention to time and kept looking at clock every 5 minutes and I didn't really satisfy with the way that came out with dots.
Second paper, I really enjoyed this one because of music. Actually I made dots with rhythm of music that I listened from my friend's music. I think that's why I didn't check the clock as much as I did first one and I realized that the time went fast. Finally the last one, even I was really tired of making dots, I started to draw something with my dots. I don't remember how I started but actually I started making pointillism and I could concentrate on my last one.
The reason I decide making dots for my performance was I usually draw or make dots when I'm bored and that always make me feel comfortable. I did know it would be really hard to do that for 6 hours. Also many people think I was crazy doing that. However I enjoyed my performance. I usually one of the people watch someone's performance all the time, even it was only 6 hours, I was happy that people watched my performance and think I'm crazy doing those because I felt same thing when I watch somone's performance.
